• SHARJAH-With three crayons in each hand, Thai artist Yodchat Bupasiri conducted a workshop of an unconventional nature. The workshop, which was part of the illustrators’ program at the Sharjah Children’s Reading Festival encouraged children (and willing adults) to express themselves in color using any form of line, dot and curve that they wished.

SCRFUnder the title “Move Your Body” Bupasiri broke the fear of the white canvas by initially asking the audience to randomly place dots on it. Now that a perfectly white sheet of paper had been ruined, there was no turning back – it was now time for the lines and curves. “Don’t think too much” she instructed.

This almost meditative form of creative expression helps concentration and helps children connect with their original creativity, according to Bupasiri, who comes from the city of Nakorn Phanom .

The idea was inspired by a workshop that she has conducted with American artists Morgan O’Hara. O’Hara form of art is called Live transmission – an attentive and performance-based kind of drawing. Essentially, with a pencil in each hand, O’Hara sits in various situations and starts to move her pencils. The result might seem like scribbles but they are an expression of what the artist felt and saw in that situation.

In another workshop Bupasiri gives the child 6 circles and asks them to draw what food they’d like to have in their lunch box. She then places them one on top of the other, frames them and gives the children their own version of the traditional Thai lunch box.

Bupasiri’s workshops were a part of a series of illustrator workshops provided by the festival. They include one in which children drew and painted a life-size giraffe, cutting and pasting to create different models, the creation of a fictional, colorful beast based on the imagination of the youngsters, free drawing and imagination and the coloring of digital drawing.
